Steve Lambert

For Steve Lambert, art is a “bridge that connects uncommon, idealistic, or even radical ideas with everyday life.”

Lambert is an American artist who was born a former Franciscan monk and an ex-Dominican nun. Having grown up the values of dedication, study, poverty, and service to others, Lambert felt he was aptly prepared for life as an artist. He received a BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute in 2000, and a MFA at the University of California, Davis in 2006. He has taught at Parsons The New School for Design as well as Hunter College in New York. His artwork works with the issue of advertising and uses the public space.

One of the most popular work he helped create was The New York Times, “Special Edition.” There were 1.2 million fake newspaper copies distributed on the streets of New York which envisioned a world where the Iraq war was over, Bush and Cheney were tried for war crimes, and congress had passed a maximum wage cap. This had created international stir as many people were fooled into believing the hoax.

Lambert’s artistic practice includes drawing, performance, intervention, culture jamming, public art, video, and internet art. He is also one of the founders of The Anti-Advertising Agency which “critiques advertising through artistic intervention”, and The Budget Gallery which promotes public exhibition of art of vacant spaces in the city.
